The current Children’s laureate, Chris Riddel has posted to his an open letter to education secretary Justine Greening calling on her to end what he’s calling the “school library lottery” where it’s pot luck if the school you go to has a well funded library with knowledgeable librarians (or one at all). Perhaps surprisingly they’re not a statutory requirement and are also not inspected by Ofsted.
In the letter which you can find on The Bookseller website he asks for the government to act on their own findings and make library provision available to all children and for standards for them to created by Ofsted. He goes on to state that libraries are a vital resource which nurture a life long love of reading for pleasure.
Riddel does not stand alone in this, he has the full backing of all of the former Children’s laureates Quentin Blake, Anne Fine, Michael Morpurgo, Jacqueline Wilson, Michael Rosen, Anthony Browne, Julia Donaldson and Malorie Blackman.
And we can’t help but mention it’s beautifully illustrated too!
